About your new role

The Legal Counsel will make an exciting contribution to the support functions of Neami, one of Australia’s largest community-based mental health providers by providing legal advice on various areas including applicable legislation (State and Commonwealth), consent requirements, privacy, intellectual property, corporate and commercial law, contract negotiation and drafting, tender submissions, employment and WHS law, collaboration with funders and general project governance. Advice is also given in relation to consumer information sharing in a variety of contexts, and in relation to subpoenas/summons and coronial investigations. Legal support is also provided in relation to Neami’s premises (leases, office fit-outs and construction).

The Legal Counsel is an integral part of the Governance and Assurance Network team at Neami, based at Neami’s Head Office in Preston, Victoria. Other team members include the General Counsel amp; Company Secretary, Senior Legal Counsel, Senior Manager Risk and Assurance, and Executive Assistant amp; Board Secretary. From time to time the team hosts Practical Legal Training students.

What you will bring to the role?

  • Tertiary qualifications in law and admitted to practice as an Australian Legal Practitioner
  • Demonstrated experience in corporate and commercial law, and/or other relevant areas of law such as privacy, NFP and employment.
  • Outstanding ability to write with brevity, simplicity and clarity to diverse audiences.
  • Excellent legal research, analytical, and writing skills
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with a wide variety of non-legal audiences (Senior Management, service delivery staff, Head Office departments, the Board), together with strong negotiation skills
  • Highly developed organisational and time management skills including managing competing priorities, setting and maintaining deadlines
  • Strong working knowledge of the entire Microsoft Office suite including, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook, and a willingness to learn and use other software programmes.
