About our role

Northern Star Resources are seeking a motivated and passionate Load and Haul Superintendent to join our team at the iconic Super pit in Kalgoorlie. The main purpose of this position is to manage and provide leadership to the Load and Haul Mining Team to ensure that all mine plans and strategic business objectives are executed in a coordinated, cost effective and timely manner.

This is a residential role reporting to the Mining Open Pit Manager, working a 5:2/4:3 roster, 10 hour day.

Key accountabilities:

  • Provide leadership and direction to all mining teams to ensure the safest and efficient mining operations to achieve production targets.
  • Identify risks and opportunities and develop strategies to improve performance, reduce risk and cost
  • Monitor and manage the performance of the Mining and Dispatch teams to ensure sound execution on the weekly plan and ability to react to changing conditions.
  • Work with the Technical Services team to ensure weekly and monthly plans are achievable with stretch targets. Review and report on a daily basis to the Open Pit Manager on conformance to plan and adapt to change a plan where needed to ensure monthly targets are met.
  • Ensure that daily, weekly and monthly reconciliation of actual and planned performance is conducted and a system for improving on those reconciliations is in place and effective.
  • Implement all safety procedures, rules and regulations and statutory regulations in accordance with the Safety Management Plan.
  • Provide leadership through coaching, mentoring and developmental activities to the mining team and our business partners, driving a positive workplace culture that reflects KCGM’s Code of Conduct.
  • Optimise the performance across teams bringing all up to the same high standard
  • Understand and monitor the effectiveness of procedures, policies and processes that teams use in their daily work. Identify improvement opportunities.
  • Engage with peer Superintendents and other service / support roles to help team and site achieve Strategic Objectives
  • Ensure that all incidents and accidents are reported, oversee investigations, where required, and follow up to minimise and manage risk ensuring that the Mines Act and Regulations and the Occupational Health and Safety Act is complied with at all times.
  • Cooperate with site operational and safety representatives to ensure that all Open Pit operational investigations, incident and accident reports are completed in a timely fashion and to a high standard.
  • Participate in KCGM internal audits as required.
  • Contribute to developing and managing the department budget and forecast to ensure expenditure is within budget.
  • Manage business partner contracts through the assigned Front Line Managers to ensure production targets can be achieved and that there is coordinated performance management, cost control and safety compliance.
  • Comply with all reasonable and lawful instructions that are consistent with your contract of employment.
  • Minimum of ten (10) years open pits mining experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to diagnose problems and identify potential solutions by strategically thinking.
  • Sound knowledge of the Mines Act and Regulations.
  • Experience in performance management of team members enhancing team self-esteem using ability to coach, mentor and influence others, and the ability to build a strong performing team.
  • Experience in budgeting, financial analysis, cost management.
  • Current unencumbered West Australian C Class Drivers Licence.
  • Formal leadership / management qualifications.
  • A Degree in Mining Engineering or Geology
  • Working knowledge of Vulcan / Datamine / Basic knowledge of OPMS scheduling software.
  • Western Australian DMiRS Quarry Managers Certificate of Competency
