Slate is hiring an associate editor to help oversee its culture coverage. This is an early-career position with room to grow. Ideal candidates are culture junkies with at least three years of writing or editing experience who have a nose for news, an eye for the unexpected, and a mind for constructing surprising and persuasive arguments. They will help manage a small team to produce original articles every day, offering a mix of news analysis, criticism, reporting, and miscellaneous mischief. They will stay on top of the latest happenings in movies, music, books, TV, and/or internet culture, while also finding a way forSlate to leave its own stamp on the news cycle. The strongest applicants may be switch-hitters with the ability to both transform a rough draft into sparkling copy and to quickly conceive and write articles themselves.The position is full-time, on staff, with benefits. Slate welcomes candidates with diverse backgrounds and perspectives. The position can be located in New York or D.C. Strong remote candidates will be considered. This is a position covered under a collective bargaining agreement between Slate and the Writers Guild of America East. The annual base pay range for this job is between $69,000 and $80,000.
Key Responsibilities• Fast, daily editing and assigning, with both staff writers and freelancers, on the biggest culture stories of the moment• Generating ideas for quick analysis and conversation-starting (or conversation-ending) work on movies, television, books, music, internet culture, or ideally all of the above• Leading and growing our footprint in certain areas of culture coverage• Operating as an integral part of Slate’s culture team
