Job Description

About the RoleSlate is looking for a Producer for the Narrative Podcast Unit. This person will primarily be assigned to the seasonal history show One Year hosted by Josh Levin. The person we’re looking for has a keen grasp of all aspects of audio storytelling and is eager to find untold stories from the past. They have a natural curiosity and interest in adding perspective and context to the news. They have an ear for good tape and a nose for finding archival clips. They know how to use field recordings and sound design to bring old stories to life. They can move adroitly between reporting, booking, recording, editing, project-managing, and troubleshooting. They can track and integrate multiple rounds of notes and turn around careful edits and mixes on tight deadlines. Applicants must be proactive self-starters who are efficient, creative, and personable.Slate welcomes candidates with diverse backgrounds and perspectives. The position can be located in New York City or Washington, D.C. This is a position covered under a collective bargaining agreement between Slate and the Writers Guild of America, East. The minimum salary for this position is $66,000, but compensation can and will reflect applicants' experience.Key Responsibilities Gather information from publications, libraries, and online databases Comb through audio and video archives for appropriate clips Identify possible storylines and characters Track down sources, sometimes from incomplete or outdated information Select interview highlights and edit tape assemblies using Pro Tools Create spreadsheets to keep track of sources, archival materials, etc. Fact-check episodes and help facilitate legal review of scripts Engineer recording sessions with hosts and guests, including remote connections Post podcasts, show pages, and engage with social media
Requirements Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience At least two years of intensive audio production experience in radio, podcasting, or equivalent, preferably in a journalistic environment. Excellent writing and audio-editing skills, story sense, and production ability Experience conducting significant research in an academic or professional setting An instinct for what’s interesting and relevant in a large body of information A familiarity with and enthusiasm for narrative podcasts Mastery of professional audio editing software, preferably ProTools.Bonus Points Experience creating, producing, and/or hosting podcasts.
