Job Description
Slate is hiring an experienced audio producer and manager to supervise our morning news podcasts, What Next and What Next: TBD. The person we’re looking for is a team leader, a deft and speedy audio editor, a news junkie with sound editorial judgment, and an organized, humane manager of people and projects. This person has a keen sense of what works and what doesn’t in audio, along with a wealth of ideas. Ideally this person would have experience with and insight into both conversation-driven and scripted shows. This role would be based out of Slate’s Brooklyn, New York, or Washington, D.C., office once Slate returns from remote work.Key Responsibilities- Lead, organize, and manage a team of five producers across two programs
- Coordinate coverage with hosts and coordinate logistics for substitute hosts
- Work with the team to bring scripted showsboth newsy daily shows and longer-term projectsfrom conception to release: booking guests, recording, managing tape, editing, scoring, mixing
- Create and manage collaborations with the broader Slate newsroom
- Participate in strategy and planning around listenership goals
- Work cooperatively with Slate’s promotion, sales, and audience development teams
- Coordinate transcripts and other complementary content for the Slate site
Requirements- At least five years of audio production experience in radio, podcasting, or equivalent
- At least two years managing a team
- Excellent audio editing skills
- Great ideas and sound editorial judgment
- Ability to multitask and excel in a fast-paced work environment
- A genuine drive to stay up on the latest politics, tech, culture, and legal news
- An understanding of the daily news podcast market
- Intelligence, kindness, and humor
