About the role
Our international team is looking for a multi-disciplinary Designer to support our Design Lead for 1 day a week in our Melbourne office. This person will play an important role in producing assets and resources to empower our editorial workforce to share breaking news.
This person would initially work across our university resources, video assets, podcast assets and data visualisation templates. They'd also support our Design Lead with user testing synthesis, crafting web components for our new design system and documenting design rules across the component library and brand manual. This person would work with the Design Lead, Platform team developers and Editorial teams to support in the evolution of our brand, visual identity and component library.
If you worked here in the past month, you might have been involved in:
- Launching a new set of Canva templates that help non-designers produce polished visual communications
- Taking part in a weekly work-in-progress meeting with our Senior Developers to improve our website user experience
- Assessing colour contrast across charts amp; infographics to improve accessibility for vision impaired readers
- Celebrating The Conversation’s 10 year anniversary at a local winery with our friendly AU amp; NZ team
- Supporting our Audience team with the design of their social media posts, videos and promotional campaign material.
Responsibilities
- Function as a multi-disciplinary designer on assigned projects from Kickoff meetings through documentation, conception, execution and delivery.
- Collaborate with the Design Lead and execute designs that translate the attitude and value of The Conversation brand across all lines of business. Demonstrating ability to take direction and constructive criticism.
- Work enthusiastically, respectfully and collaboratively within the Platform team as well as other teams across the organisation.
- Generate multiple design explorations and iterate designs to the satisfaction of the lead. As well as work autonomously.
- Attend project kick-offs brainstorms and conceptualize relevant content that reflects The Conversation’s mission to share knowledge and inform decisions for the public good.
- Possesses a commitment to nurture and embody inspiration and a desire to push the boundaries in design and maintain brand consistency throughout all projects.
- Present creative work with a strong ability to communicate your creative process, thoughts, ideas and connection to the brief.
- Work on various types of projects, including: editorial content, branded content, social media templates, brand manual guidelines and component library.
- Stay current with contemporary design and technology trends.
- Create reusable assets and templates to facilitate and reduce production times.

Requirements
About You
- Balance of design skills across typography amp; graphic design, video, data visualisation amp; social media formats
- Strong aesthetic skills with an eye for colours, fonts and layouts.
- Clear, open, positive and collaborative communication style
- Basic knowledge of web accessibility
- Passion for social media and design trends
- Ability to think about an entire design system as well as an individual component
- Knowledge of and familiarity with Adobe Creative Cloud Products (Photoshop, InDesign, AfterEffects, Illustrator), Sketch and Canva.
- Strong desire to develop creatively and push The Conversation brand forward
- Comfortable asking questions that reveal gaps in knowledge and eagerness to learn
- Ideally 1-3 years experience working as a designer, with solid identity and branding design work
