Job Description

Paper Giant is a strategic design consultancy that helps organisations deliver better products, services and policies.

Strategic Designers are consultants that apply human-centred design principles to develop feasible strategic approaches that help organisations function better. They do this by scoping and defining design approaches, conducting research, creating and applying strategic frameworks and communicating insights to support business outcomes.

As a Principal for the Strategic Design practice, you will support the design and delivery of projects for clients. You will lead teams and help them to deliver effective strategic design for products, services, policy, systems and organisations. You will help teams to apply strategic design to uncover insights and create opportunities for outcomes that lead to systemic change.

You will work with other practice leads and project team members to deliver high quality work for clients in the government, not-for-profit, and private sectors. You should have in-depth knowledge and experience in design, strategy, research and facilitation with diverse organisations and communities. Expert knowledge and experience in applying human-centred design methodologies to achieve strategic outcomes is essential.

What you will do:
Practice and craft
  • Use your practice expertise to solve client problems by applying strategic design;
  • Facilitate strategic design by tackling problems that range from concise and well-defined, to the expansive and ambiguous;
  • Discover organisation needs by designing approaches that use the appropriate methods and resources;
  • Translate learnings into practical and feasible policy, product or service deliverables;
  • Create engaging narratives that frame research findings in ways that resonate with the target audience; and
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary project and client teams to realise ways to transform strategic insights into action.
Project delivery
  • Independently run multiple projects concurrently, across multiple disciplines, and in challenging and novel contexts;
  • Be pragmatic about achieving project goals within your constraints; and
  • Project manage by balancing client needs against available time and resources, within the bounds of an agreed scope.
Managing client relationships
  • Develop meaningful relationships with clients; and
  • Advocate to clients about choices of strategic design methodology and the value of certain approaches.
Business development
  • Help clients understand how strategic design can be applied to solve problems;
  • Generate leads and nurture new business opportunities;
  • Pitch strategic design work to potential clients; and
  • Respond to selected RFQs and manage the end to end process with little input.
Ethics, purpose and care
  • Be comfortable with the ambiguity of working in a trans-disciplinary way, and support your teammates;
  • Work to create an environment in which everybody's voices can be heard;
  • Explore and experiment with new tools and methods; and
  • Stay aware of industry trends and identify opportunities for Paper Giant’s own strategic design practice

Requirements

The background and skills you must have:

  • You have full and current working rights for Australia
  • You hold, or are willing to apply for, an Australian Government security clearance
  • You have 5 years experience working in a human-centred design field
  • You mentor team members, lead by example within projects, and create learning opportunities where you can
  • You give thoughtful, constructive, actionable critical feedback
  • You can show at least one complex project where you used strategic design to improve a product, service or policy
  • You understand qualitative research methodologies and their application
  • You can derive useful insight from complex qualitative and quantitative data
  • You have excellent stakeholder management, facilitation and communication skills
  • You can tailor project outputs and design communication to meet client needs
  • You will help us to design and build a positive, collaborative, inclusive studio culture
