Job Description

At Canva, we create tools that empower the world to design. Our mission is to democratise design and empower creativity for anyone and everyone, on every platform! Inspired by a team of talented thinkers, an amazing culture and remarkable growth trajectory we’re out to change the world, one design at a time.

Since launch in August 2013 we have grown exponentially, amassing over 40 million active users across 190 different countries who have created billions of designs. We are one of the world’s fastest-growing technology companies and we have only achieved about 1% of what we are capable of!

The Finance Group’s mission is to protect and serve Canva and its key stakeholders; that is protecting Canva from external pressures and risks whilst balancing the need to best serve our teams. The mission of the Corporate Accounting team is to ensure that financial information withstands external scrutiny in compliance with all local regulations and standards.

As the Canva business grows, we are exposed to a broader range of accounting regulations and expanding reporting requirements. With expanding operations across the world in multiple jurisdictions, we need a Technical Accounting Manager who can strengthen our US GAAP technical accounting processes and provide deeper insights into the accounting standards and regulations that govern large corporations.

About the role
In this highly critical role, you will work closely with the Corporate Accounting Lead (located in Sydney HQ) to serve as the subject matter expert for US GAAP technical accounting. You will collaborate closely with the Corporate Accounting and other Finance teams to help the company unravel complex accounting problems and ensure that financial information is compliant with US GAAP and corporate filing regulations. In this role, you will have the opportunity to:
- Work at one of the world’s fastest growing tech companies; your work will impact all of Canva’s internal and external stakeholders
- Learn from and work with some of Canva’s best talent, including Canva’s founders, engineers, product & growth professionals
- Develop and grow in a newly created role with the ability to make and support decisions that support the growth of the company and protect its stakeholders

What you'll do:

  • Being primarily responsible for the review and maintenance of US GAAP compliant accounting policies and processes
  • Researching and providing technical accounting consultations for significant, complex or non-routine transactions
  • Review new FASB pronouncements, trends in regulatory areas of focus and US GAAP guidance and proactively address any impacts on Canva’s financial statements
  • Support the uplift of existing accounting processes to comply with best practice financial reporting requirements in areas such as management estimates and equity accounting
  • Prepare and manage the processes and documentation required to ensure compliance with best practice
  • Collate and maintain all relevant documentation throughout the process from advisors, auditors and management

We'd love if you had:

  • A strong understanding of current US GAAP rules, FASB pronouncements and accounting principles key to the SaaS/software industry will be highly regarded
  • Ability to research and provide relevant technical guidance to solve complex accounting problems
  • Experience with the collation of accounting policy documentation and processes to manage feedback and input from multiple stakeholders
  • Working knowledge of how to establish and maintain best practice processes and controls required throughout the technical accounting process
  • CPA required and at least 5 years of relevant professional experience in public and industry accounting
  • A problem-solving mindset to always make complex things simple
  • Thrive in a hyper-growth, agile environment and be adaptable to change
  • Excellent communication and leadership skills with the ability to guide and educate various stakeholders and teams
  • Ability to balance attention to detail and managing competing priorities, directing the team to achieve deliverables
  • Proactive, hands-on approach. We are a team of team players!
  • Experience working with team members based in different locations and countries
