Job Description

Slate is hiring a producer to join the legal podcast Amicus and work with the jurisprudence team on the text side of Slate.We’re looking for someone with an audio journalism background and a strong interest in covering the Supreme Court, important news happening elsewhere in the judicial system, and the way it affects Americans’ lives. The right person for this job is a strong team player, with good ideas for stories, guests, and books that can move a conversation about the court forward. They are also invested in fostering creative ways to grow podcast audiences and the relationship between the text side of our SCOTUS coverage and the audio side.This is a position covered under a collective bargaining agreement between Slate and the Writers Guild of America, East.
Key Responsibilities
  • Research and compile subject-matter briefings
  • Collect and collate story ideas and potential guest profiles
  • Assist in maintaining production calendar, balancing planning for known key dates at SCOTUS with responding to important legal news and events beyond the High Court
  • Pitch and book guests who can deliver fresh perspectives on the issues facing the court
  • Assist in developing long-term and special reporting projects in partnership with the jurisprudence team
  • Edit audio quickly and flawlessly on Hindenburg
  • Select strong audio clips to feature on social media
  • Pick out the relevant parts of the audio interviews to transcribe for the site, and frame those excerpts in a compelling way for Slate’s audience
  • Help promote and grow Amicus, including building promotional opportunities out of host’s extensive media presence
  • Connect the work of the show to the work on the site via social media, newsletters, and other creative ideas
Requirements
  • At least two years of experience in news or legal coverage
  • At least two years of experience in audio editing. Excellent digital audio editing skills on Pro Tools, Adobe Audition, or Hindenburg.
  • Excellent writing and communication skills
