About your new role

As Aboriginal Health Practitioner, you will bring Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander knowledge and cultural skills, coupled with primary health care skills to ensure Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander adults with Mental Health and/or Social and Emotional Wellbeing issues are supported within the centre.

You will contribute to the development and delivery of culturally safe distress support within the centre and assessment and referral to appropriate follow up care either within or outside of the centre. This includes the development of care plans involving individuals, families and community, clinical pathways and clear referral pathways and processes.

You will provide a range of effective therapeutic interventions using established evidence-based techniques and methodologies and will deliver culturally adapted, evidence-based interventions to promote strong social and emotional wellbeing and prevent the escalation of common mental and behavioural disorders (including alcohol and drug use disorders).

What you will bring to the role

  • Be of Aboriginal and or Torres Strait Islander descent (this is an identified position)
  • Possess a Certificate IV or higher in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Primary Health Care
  • Hold current registration with the Australian Health Practitioners Regulation Agency (AHPRA) as an Aboriginal Health Practitioner/ registered with the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Practitioner Board of Australia (ATSIHPBA)
  • Demonstrated ability to provide cultural knowledge and advice to team members
  • Demonstrated well developed written, verbal and interpersonal skills including with the ability to communicate sensitively in a cross-cultural environment with Aboriginal clients and staff.
  • Ability to work in a multi-disciplinary team maintaining professionalism, confidentiality, and discretion.
  • Understanding and commitment to Aboriginal health, and knowledge of current issues affecting the lives of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people
  • Ability to work a 7-day rotating roster, shift work, including morning, evening, and weekend shifts. rates apply
  • Demonstrated ability to support people when they are distressed, ability to listen compassionately and to ability support people to identify and act upon solutions that may improve their wellbeing
